Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum is located in Hangar 1 of the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, Colorado. The museum is dedicated to displaying iconic aircraft, space vehicles, artifacts, military uniforms and much more.

AV-8B Harrier II+

AV-8B Harrier II+

The Harrier II first flew in 1981 and joined the Marine Corps in 1985. With four exhaust nozzles that can rotate from horizontal to vertical, the Harrier can “jump” off the ground in a short take off run or can even take off and land vertically. It can carry a wide array of bombs, rockets and missiles on six underwing hard points, plus a 25mm rotary cannon with up to 300 rounds of ammunition. Fully loaded, a Harrier carries more firepower than a World War II B-17 Flying Fortress bomber!

This Harrier on display at the Air & Space Museum has seen combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and the Red Sea, and has the 3rd highest number of combat hours of any Harrier. It is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat

The F-14 Tomcat played a leading role in the 1986 movie “Top Gun.” The Navy needed an airplane to protect its surface fleets from hostile aircraft and anti-ship missiles at long range. After a naval version of the Air Force’s F-111 fighter bomber proved was unsuitable for aircraft carrier operations, its radar and long-range AIM-54 Phoenix air intercept missile systems were transferred to an entirely new design, the F-14.

Bell UH-1M Iroquois

One of the most iconic symbols of the Vietnam War is the Bell UH-1 “Huey” helicopter. Hueys served throughout the conflict as troop and cargo carriers, air ambulances, and gunships with the US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.

100 Rockets for 100 Years

Celebrate a hundred years of rocketry! In 1926, Dr. Robert H. Goddard sent the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket into the air, traveling 41 feet in 2.5 seconds. In honor of this anniversary, we invite you and your family to help us send 100 more skyward.

At this event, you’ll participate in fun and fascinating experiences:

  • Build and launch your own rocket*
  • Explore the science behind flight propulsion and the many ways these vehicles take to the skies
  • Enjoy STEAM activities
  • Attend live demonstrations of water and Estes Rockets** at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 pm

Full STEAM Ahead – Launch Your Students’ Aerospace Journey!

Join us to learn about both Wings Aerospace Exploration (WAE) and Wings Aerospace Exploration Enrichment (WAEE) opportunities for students in grades 6–12 from the team at Wings Over the Rockies®. During this session, you’ll hear a program overview, meet our educators and instructors, learn from current and former student experiences, and get your questions answered. This meeting will take place at the Air & Space Museum (7711 East Academy Blvd, Denver, CO 80230).

Discover how WAE / WAEE students have the opportunity to explore the wonders of flight, engage with industry professionals, and gain valuable skills for future careers in aerospace. The program includes building and operating RC airplanes, drones, and robotics, as well as coding, rocketry, and LOTS of other aviation and space-related subjects. WAE / WAEE programs complement but do not take the place of an accredited educational institution.
