Join Wings Exploration of Flight, in partnership with the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing, from August 30 – September 1 to experience rare historic aircraft up close! The featured aircraft of this event is the B-25J Mitchell WWII bomber “Yellow Rose”. The B-25 will be joined by a SPAD XIII flying WWI replica from the Vintage Aero Flying Museum. Marvel at the evolution in aviation between the two World Wars.

General public access & ground tours to the B-25 opens at 10:00 a.m.

Aircraft tours are included with admission and will be offered when the plane is not flying or being moved on the ramp. Ground tours will be offered on August 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., August 31 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. and September 1 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Take a Flight on the B-25

B-25 Yellow Rose

“Yellow Rose” is a B-25 Mitchell bomber, like those flown by the Doolittle Raiders in the Raid Over Tokyo on April 18, 1942. The B-25 is owned, maintained and flown by the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing.

Living history flight experiences are approximately 30 minutes long and may be purchased in advance online. Flight pricing varies from $449 to $649 per passenger. One admission to the showcase is included with purchase of a flight ticket – show your flight ticket confirmation at entry to receive showcase admission.

The Vintage Aero Flying Museum is the home of the Lafayette Foundation’s flying and artifact collection. The Foundation’s director, Andy Parks, was tasked with maintaining the legacy of the Lafayette Escadrille by the last surviving members of the unit during their final reunion over five decades ago. In that time, the Foundation and its volunteers have amassed many original artifacts from the war as well as hand-built and maintained the aircraft in the flying collection. The museum is based at the Platte Valley Airpark in Hudson, CO.

SPAD XIII

SPAD XIII

The SPAD XIII was one of France’s most successful fighter aircraft of World War I. It was used not only by the French Air Service, but by the British, Russian, Italian and American Air Services as well. Its wing design with an interplane strut gave the aircraft significant strength for WWI,  allowing the plane to dive at over 240mph, without having the wing break away. While not the most maneuverable, it was fast, strong, easy to fly and had state of the art firepower making it a formidable fighter.

The museum’s aircraft is in the markings of the Famous American Author James Norman Hall who was an original Member of the Escadrille Americaine, later to be called the Lafayette Escadrille. Hall was well known for the books he co-authored with fellow LaFayette Flying Corps pilot, Charles Nordoff, most famously, “Mutiny on the Bounty”.

This example is one of four flying examples in the world and is a part of the Foundation’s flying collection.
