Wings launches Emmy-nominated PBS show “Behind the Wings”
The premiere Season 6 of Wings Over the Rockies’ Emmy-nominated television series “Behind the Wings” will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 on Rocky Mountain PBS. MDT. Additional episodes air on consecutive Thursdays and Sundays in November and December.
From the use of artificial intelligence in military aviation to two massive aircraft that have carried innovation, the latest season of “Behind the Wings” explores some of the world’s most exciting aerospace stories. Season 6 will take viewers to the forefront of aerospace innovation and historical marvels.
In addition to the use of AI pilot agents and the ethical questions it raises, the four-episode season also explores the Super Guppy cargo transport aircraft that helped America win the Space Race as well as the Stratolaunch Roc, which is the world’s largest operating aircraft and offers air launch hypersonic flight testing.

Each 30-minute episode in Season 6, funded in part by Alpine Bank, has a unique aerospace focus:
- Episode 1 (11/7 at 7:30 p.m. MDT & 11/24 at 5 p.m. MDT): AI in Military Aviation: Explores AI in military aviation, tracing the progress from lab simulations to real-world flight testing.
- Episode 2 (11/7 at 8 p.m. MDT & 12/1 at 5 p.m. MDT): Collaborative Combat Aircraft: The focus shifts to the ethical dilemmas and global stakes of deploying AI pilot agents with Collaborative Combat Aircraft.
- Episode 3 (11/14 at 7:30 p.m. MDT & 12/8 at 5 p.m. MDT): The Super Guppy: Tells the historical, and unlikely story of The Super Guppy, the original super cargo transport aircraft that played a pivotal role in NASA’s Apollo program during the space race.
- Episode 4 (11/14 at 8 p.m. MDT & 12/15 at 5 p.m. MDT): Hypersonic Flight Testing: Highlighting remarkable advancements in hypersonic flight testing, and featuring the Stratolaunch Roc, the world’s largest operational aircraft. It’s time to go Behind the Wings.
“Behind the Wings” has amassed over 80 million lifetime views on YouTube from all over the world and has aired in over 106 PBS markets across the U.S. It is directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Cray Novick, and hosted by Colorado’s first woman fighter pilot Tracy LaTourrette.
