Have You Heard About the Phenomenon of Drone Soccer?

Since starting in South Korea in 2016, this sport has taken the world by storm. It’s a fast-paced team game where pilots fly 20cm drones inside a 20×10 arena. Teams of five go head-to-head as scoring drones attempt to fly through the other’s goal while teammates defend, block and collide. To put it in soccer terms, it’s just like having your striker and defender positions!

Flying is Only Part of the Challenge

As with any sport, the team doesn’t show up and play once a week. They train, learn how to build and maintain their drones, tune and upgrade, and replace broken parts during events. When you’re crashing drones into each other repeatedly, you better know how to fix one quickly to help be an integral part of your team. This also teaches participants about electronics, coding, aerodynamics, engineering and adapting strategy. This is where Wings comes in!

Experience Drone Soccer

Wings Over the Rockies has helped introduce Coloradans to the sport since 2021, when Exploration of Flight hosted the first Drone Soccer competition in North America. Since then, students have continued to build their skills through our programs, camps and competitions.

We are also proud to be the home of our very own team, the Wings Predators. The Predators have won multiple awards and competitions, including placing first in the U.S. Drone Soccer 2025 and 2026 District IX competitions and earning 3rd place in the National Championship. Through those experiences, they have traveled outside Colorado and played against international teams.

Wings is also a proud supporter of U.S. Drone Soccer and hosts competitions multiple times a year.

You Can Join the Team

Whether it’s coming to cheer on the Predators or taking flight in a brand new way, we invite you! Both middle and high school students can join our Wings Exploration Program to become eligible. Or, if you’d just like to try it out and have fun, sign up for a summer drone soccer camp at both Wings locations!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the drones in cages?

The protective cages allow drones to safely collide during play while helping protect their propellers and other components. Contact is an intentional part of the sport, with players using their drones to block opponents and defend their goal.

What skills do students learn through Drone Soccer?

Students gain hands-on experience with aerodynamics, electronics, coding, drone maintenance and flight. Just as importantly, competition develops teamwork, communication, strategy, leadership and problem-solving skills.

Can you start playing right away?

No, before students can start piloting, there is a training and learning process for all the basics.

Can Drone Soccer lead to careers in aviation and technology?

Yes, they can! We’ve had several graduates from this program who have learned real-life skills in uncrewed aircraft systems, engineering, public safety, and more.
