Join us at the Air & Space Museum to hear about the sounds and music featured in Star Wars™ from guest speaker, Jim Shima.

Hear about the creation, legend and lore of many different Star Wars™ sound effects. Learn their history, origination and methods of creation. Iconic sounds are decomposed into their principal components through analysis and personal communications with sound designer Ben Burtt. This talk covers the areas of character effects, weapon sounds and vehicle effects.

Speaker: Jim Shima

Jim Shima is an AI and DSP algorithm engineer for Ball Aerospace. His hobbies include audio engineering, movie prop building, and sound and music composition. He has been involved in the movie prop community for over 24 years, designing high-end interactive replica props, voice changers, full-size droids, and set pieces for movies and collections. He has worked with Disney, ILM, Regal Robot, Skywalker Sound and Lucasfilm. He also invented the quintessential lightsaber technology for interactive light and sound used in the industry today, which debuted in the movie The Force Awakens. Furthermore, he led the restoration of the X-wing fighter housed at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, by designing and installing all of the interactive electronics.
