The Douglas DC-3 first gained popularity in the 1930s, but remained in regular airline service for more than 70 years, and some are still used to haul cargo.is widely recognized as the first airliner that could make a profit just by carrying passengers. After World War II, dozens of new airlines got their starts using DC-3 converted from military C-47 transports. Three of those airlines merged in 1950 to form the first Frontier Airlines.
