Other Ways to Give
Qualified Charitable Distributions
Are you 70 ½ or older? Do you have a traditional IRA?
If you answered “yes” to both of those questions, we’re excited to tell you about a smarter way to support Wings Over the Rockies!
Because of recent tax law changes, traditional IRA holders 70 ½ and older are eligible to make a tax-free gift from their IRA to a qualified charity of their choice, like Wings!
These gifts, called Qualified Charitable Distributions, are 100% tax-free, regardless of whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return. And, if you are 72 or older, you are required by the IRS to withdraw money from your IRA every year, called a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). If you don’t use your RMD, you could face a hefty tax penalty. Using your RMD to make a QCD is a great way to avoid excess taxes this year!
Make a Gift of Stock
If you own stock for more than one year that has gone up in value, you can donate the stock to Wings, receive a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock at the time of the transfer (its increased value), and never pay capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the stock. Consider your long-term publicly traded stock for a charitable donation or ask your advisor about the best asset to contribute.
What is a qualified charitable distribution?
Generally, a qualified charitable distribution is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (other than an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA) owned by an individual who is age 70½ or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity.
