Step 1: Young Eagles Flight (Ages 8-17)
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program is designed to introduce children ages 8 to 17 to the exciting world of flight. The Young Eagles program consists of EAA member pilots who volunteer their time and aircraft to give free introductions to flight to youth. Learn more.
Includes:
- Free flight with an FAA certificated pilot. (Ages 8-17)
- Free access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course: $299 value. (Ages 13 and up)
- Reimbursement of the FAA written exam if passing score received after using Sporty’s online course; $175 value. (Ages 15 and up)
- Free first flight lesson after completing the first three volumes of the Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course: $160 value. (Ages 13 to 19)
Step 2: Introduction to Pilot Pathway (8th – 9th Grade)
Wings Over the Rockies’ Introduction to Pilot Pathway two-part workshop offers the basics of pilot training and helps feed the love of flight. ($40 registration fee required.)
Includes:
- Student membership to Wings Over the Rockies
- Introduction to pilot basics
- Simulator training
- Pre-flight basics
Formerly known as Introduction to Ground School
Step 3: Private Pilot Ground School (10th-12th Grade)
The 8-week Private Pilot Ground School will cover all the areas you will be tested on for your private pilot certificate, including air-space, aircraft systems, aerodynamics, cross country flight planning, weather and more. Instruction and assignments are provided by certified flight instructors.

Step 4: Flight Training Scholarships (Ages 15 and up)
Wings Over the Rockies is thrilled to offer* a limited number of flight training scholarships to Colorado students (ages 15-19). The funds have generously been provided by the James C. Ray Foundation and offer students an opportunity to work towards private pilot certification in gliders or single engine airplanes. Funding can additionally be used for discounted ground school, to include books and material.
- Up to $12,000 flight training scholarship for a private pilot single-engine land certificate
- Up to $8,000 flight training scholarship for a private pilot-glider certificate
*Application required. Scholarships are not available year-round.
